Welcome to NU Political Union!
The Northwestern University Political Union (PU) is a student organization with the mission of engaging Northwestern's community in thoughtful and engaging discussion about politics. We have weekly debates on Mondays at 7:00 PM in Scott Hall 201, as well as a variety of other events throughout each quarter, which are open to all members of the NU community.
What are debates? How are they structured?
Our weekly meetings are in the form of debates, but they're not like your high school's debate program. Two students take the "pro" and "con" sides and start off the meeting with short opening statements. Openers are followed by two periods open to the floor – the first for the room to ask clarifying questions to the debaters, and the second for an open forum, in which anyone can offer rebuttals, relevant facts, or their own opinions! We then pivot back to the same two students to provide closing arguments before taking a vote on the resolution.
How contentious are the debates?
Not very contentious at all! All debates are moderated by the Speaker, who ensures our debates remain rooted in their purpose: to provide a safe space for all to engage in effective political dialogue and discourse.
And (perhaps most importantly) after every debate, members continue the discussion at our post-debate hangout.
What topics are covered? How are resolutions chosen?
Each week the Executive Board meets to decide on a resolution, which can cover almost any topic related to national politics, international current events, or campus issues. Members are able to input their suggestions via an online form or in-person to any member of the Executive Board. We would love to hear from YOU what topics should be discussed this year!
Recently, we've debated vaccination distribution policy, the influence of PC culture, and whether universities should consider standardized test scores in undergraduate admissions processes.
Who can debate?
Anyone can lead a debate! It's a great way to gain experience in thinking on your feet, to practice speaking publicly in an open and friendly environment, and to get more involved in PU! If you have a topic that you're passionate about or are generally interested in debating, email nupoliticalunion@gmail.com to let us know!
How can I get more involved?
Come to weekly debates (Mondays at 7:00 PM at Scott Hall 212), email nupoliticalunion@gmail.com to receive our weekly newsletter, talk to exec members, come to our post-debate hangouts after meetings, give us a suggestion for a debate resolution, or, better yet, volunteer to debate!
