Israel-Palestine Discussion
This week, instead of our usual debate format, Political Union is hosting a discussion on the Israel-Palestine conflict. It will be a great opportunity to gain deeper understanding and find common ground on the issue. With that being said, Political Union expects a civil and respectful discussion. Put simply, any hateful speech is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Our community is diverse, empathetic, and accepting. We ask that everyone keeps their speech consistent with these values.
Below are guiding questions for the discussion. Join us this Monday at 7pm in Scott Hall 201!
How have the events leading up to Oct 7 influenced this conflict? What historical context is necessary in order to understand the current war?
How does religion intertwine itself with politics in this context? How much of this conflict is rooted in religion?
How has this conflict shown light on free speech rights, specifically on college campuses in the US?
How has the dynamic between popular interest and the government influenced this conflict? What do the protests in Israel signify?
Is there a possible end to this conflict? What would need to occur for a two-state solution to be possible?
What is entailed in a nation’s right to self defense? What is not?
How has media coverage, both in the United States and abroad, influenced perspectives on the war between Israel and Hamas?
Is popular discussion of the war missing major historical conflict? How does history shape our understanding of the present in this instance?
What are effective actions to mitigate or eliminate the threat of terrorist organizations?
How must the United States and other large countries balance the provision of resources with the risk of supplying Hamas?
At what point must security interests be sacrificed for humanitarian interests?
Is the IDF justified in tolerating some civilian costs in its pursuit of those involved in the October 7th attacks? If so, what is the line or maximum civilian cost?
How does action and responsibility extend beyond just Israel and Hamas in this conflict? Are there other parties that need to be held accountable?
