Opinion: Trump’s Second Term
Donald Trump has won the popular vote for the first time, alongside the presidency for a second. As a debate club, we predicted the opposite, but Donald Trump will be the 47th president. Here is what to expect from a new Trump term.
He will place more justices on the Supreme Court
Donald Trump has made it very clear that he wants right wing justices on the court, putting 3 on the court in his first term. With Justices Thomas and Alito getting older and considering retirement, and Sonya Sotamayor getting older, it is very likely Trump gets at least one more appointment to the Supreme Court, if not more.
Mass deportation program
There were signs at the RNC calling for “Mass Deportation Now”. Donald Trump has already spoken about ending birthright citizenship, and expanding ICE to start a mass deportation that has not been seen in 70 years. Expect to see possible legislation for this program, if not, Trump will work unilaterally with ICE to deport as many undocumented people as he can.
Stop funding Ukraine
Trump has talked about ending the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, and will likely do so through negotiating with Putin, and forcing Ukraine to surrender at the threat of revoked aid.
Enable Israel
Trump has repeatedly spoken favorably about Israel, and has talked with Netanyahu while campaigning. Expect less guardrails for Israel’s action, and allowance for further expansion into the West Bank and possible resettlement of Gaza.
Remove Schedule F
Railing against long-time bureaucrats in every campaign, Trump is likely to remove Schedule F, allowing hiring and firing all members of the executive for political reasons. Expect a lack of pushback against Trump on things like vaccines and climate change that were done by science-based bureaucrats.
Pardons himself and Jan 6ers
If any of Trump's cases remain open, he will attempt to pardon himself. He will also fulfill his promise to those who broke into the Capitol on January Sixth and pardon them as well.
Increase in Tariffs
Trump has talked about tariffs for 40 years, and has discussed universal tariffs on all imports, from all countries. He has said numbers from 10% to 200%, but whatever number he lands on expect rising prices on imports.
National Abortion Ban
Definitely least likely with the amount of backpedaling Trump has done on this issue, but his Vice President and many members of his party have suggested such a policy. This may be passed through Congress, or done by enforcing the Comstock act from the 1800s that disallows any shipping of materials used in abortions. This includes abortion pills, but also any other tools used for medical abortions.
